Weekly Highlights

Today in gym we practiced are soccer skills and pssing to our partner and teammates.
Today in math we learned how to multiply, add, and subtract decimals.
In literacy, we did partner writing as a drummer boy in the Civil War.

Thursday's Highlights

Seth B. and Dashanae were the raffle winners and will enjoy a lunch with Mr. Irwin on Friday.

Students wrote a historical narrative as a pre-test for our Civil War unit.

5th graders are finishing books they have worked on in Social Emotional Learning.

Researching for an Inquiry Project

Students spent time in the computer lab researching different topics about the Civil War. After they find their information, the students will write questions for the other members of Team Innov8ors to answer.



Highlights and Reminders

During math, we used an ad from Best Buy to take a quiz adding and subtracting decimals.

We read part of a Civil War book and started to determine cause and effects within the section.

Students finished hearing a story called Civil War, Drummer Boy.  On Thursday, students will complete a Venn diagram comparing this story to another story that discussed a drummer boy in the Civil War.

November reading logs should be brought in by Friday.

Students use a Best Buy ad to do some shopping during math class.

Reminders and Highlights
In literacy, we started to compare and contrast two stories that talked about drummer boys in the Civil War.  We will complete the comparison on Wednesday.

In our journals, we wrote stories from a slaves point of view as they traveled along the Underground Railroad.

Students practiced their soccer skills in physical education.  We studied songs in music that had historical meaning.

Remember to bring your library books.

Make sure all homework is done and brought back to school.  Students are losing recess due to the fact on not being responible for their work. 

Early Bird basketball forms were sent home today.

Remember to vote in order to get Jefferson new playground equipment.

Highlights and Reminders
In art, students finished pottery projects.

Students heard the book, Under the Quilt of Night.  We learned about the Underground Railroad and the journey that slaves took to try and get to Canada.  Students practiced asking questions, finding answers, and recording our thinking.  We made an anchor chart for the different strategies when we are trying to answer questions.

In math, some groups continued to work with decimals while others began learning about positive and negative numbers.  Students analyzed Black Friday sales from Toys R Us and solved different math problems using the items.

Book orders are due by Friday, November 30th. 

It is the last week to earn pages for the month of November to help our class and school reach the reading goal.  Make sure you keep filling out your slips.

Highlights and Reminders
Have a great Thanksgiving Holiday and we will see you next Monday, Nov. 26.

Team Innov8tors did some group bonding with relay races at the end of the day.

Students earned a pizza party because our team brought in the most food for the Salvation Army.

We completed our book, How Not to Run for President.

Students viewed a video that discussed the causes of the Civil War.

Highlights and Reminders
Many students were recgonized as STAR and BEAR award winners due to strong academic effort and positive behavior choices.  Jake H., Zoe K., and Lexy M. won school raffle prizes based off their awards.

In physical education, students worked on different skills that will be monitored through a computer program.

In music, we watched the piano guys to study the tempo of the music.

During math, we continued to study number operations in base 10.  Some students were able to go on Compass learning.

In literacy, our main focus continues to be the skill of comparing and contrasting.

On Monday, we will have a new student joining our class.

Team Innov8ors brought in the most food for the Salvation Army food drive.

Highlights and Reminders
In Social/Emotional Learning, students were completing conference books for parents.

In math, some groups were reviewing multiplication and division, while others began working with decimals.

Students began practicing comparing and contrasting using their Civil War guided reading books.

With our writing, we discussed the use of transition words and phrases in our body paragraphs.

Word sort spelling test tomorrow.

Wear your favorite team colors as a way to show support.

We practice our fire drill procedure.

Highlights and Reminders
In our literacy groups, we began to look at the books we will be reading.  Some groups will read about the Underground Railroad, while other will read about the technology of the Civil War.

We read a picture book titled, Li'L Dan, the drummer boy, and practiced our questioning skills.

In math groups, students are working on a variety of skills, ranging from multi-digit addition/subtraction to decimals.

Thank you to all that donated food for the student council food drive. 

In writing, students practiced adding supporting details to their body paragraphs.

Students made up missed WKCE tests, so our class is now done.  Congratulations to everybody!

Highlights and Reminders
We have begun our next inquiry project on the Civil War.  Students started to read to help build background knowledge.

Students began their final writing project for opinion writing.  The subject is should everyone 18 or older be required to vote.

Ms. Zamir is teaching the different small math groups.  The groups are focused on different skills for number operations.

Students learned about a Walking Club that they can participate in during recess.

We all had our vision checked.  Ask your son/daughter how well they did?

Make sure all homework is done by the time you get to school; otherwise, it is a loss of recess time.

Last day to bring in food items for the Salvation Army.

Remember library books for Wednesday.

Highlights and Reminders
Both grades have completed their WKCE testing.  All students worked hard and give it their best effort.

In music, we watched a movie called The Composer is Dead.  We also played Just Dance!

During math, we did a small activity that test our knowledge of our basic facts and are ability to answer questions quickly.

In our literacy block, we finished final copies about paragraphs that described out voting posters.  In the paragraph, we wrote about what our poster was suppose to accomplish (getting adults to vote) and how we used our advertising technique.

The class watched the movie Wayside as a treat for their hard work during testing.

Report cards were sent home today.

The food drive continues through November 14th.

Highlights and Reminders
5th graders have finished their WKCE testing, but the 4th graders continued their testing.  They took their science and language arts tests.  5th graders are doing a mini-inquiry question while the 4th graders finish their testing.

In math, we reviewed some place value concepts.  Next week, we will begin units focusing on number operations and decimals.

In SEL, students discussed different learning styles. 4th graders worked on career education.

The food drive for the Salvation Army continues until next week.

Highlights and Reminders
In our WKCE test, we finished the reading sessions and we took our first math session.

We voted in our class for president.  Studnts had to check-in, take a ballot, vote, and then put it into a ballot box.  It turned out to be a tie, 14-14.  In the school balloting, President Obama had 69% of the vote and Governor Romney had 31% of the vote.

Students had to write a journal entry to talk about ways to convince adults to vote.

In math, we went back to our rotations, and students worked on skills they still had questions about.

Fundraising pick-up in the multi-purpose room tonight.

Highlights and Reminders
We welcome Mrs. Zamir, student teacher from Mount Mary College, who will be working with us during the second quarter.

We took the first two sessions of our reading test for WKCE.  We have one more reading test and we will start the math test on Tuesday.

The students participated in a a special movement class to replace art they missed today.

Students presented their voting posters to the class.  While listening to the presentations, the other students had to figure out what advertising technique was used.  Starting on Tuesday, groups will write a short paragraph that describes their poster.

Students should bring a picture of themselves and know their address as we will hold a mock election in the classroom.

Our class was the Jefferson Bear Award winner for their behavior last week in specials.

Students can still bring in food for the Salvation Army.

Highlights and Reminders
In physical education, we practiced our coordination skills by trying to catch different objects.

During reading, we worked on the writing response part of a WKCE questions.  We learned that we need to support our answers by using information from the passage.

Students turned in their opinion papers about the best holiday.  However, we had quite a few students not done.  We have to be more responsible and manage our time more effectively while doing our work.

In math, students had the chance to ask for some final clarification about topics that might be on the WKCE test.

Most groups were able to finish their voting posters in class today.

IMPORTANT: WKCE TESTING STARTS ON MONDAY.  GET PLENTY OF REST, EAT A GOOD BREAKFAST, AND COME WITH A POSITIVE ATTITUDE READY TO DO YOUR BEST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

SPARC class is now done because we are starting the testing.

Highlights and Reminders
In preparation for WKCE, we set up the room like we were testing and we did a practice math test.

Due on Friday, students should have completed a final copy about the best holiday and their WKCE word activities.

In SEL class, we looked at identifying different learning styles.

Peer mediator applications are due to Mrs. Prekop or Mrs. Benedict tomorrow. 

Student Council is having a food drive for the Salvation Army.
